Sun Books provides educational resources through digital content to children in regional and remote communities in sub-Saharan Africa, using sustainable, solar-powered technology.
Sun Books main aim is to provide children, classrooms and teachers greater access to quality technology educational resources without the need of electricity or the Internet. Our main project objective is to improve literacy and numeracy rates.
Sun Books was established due to high rates of illiteracy, lack of educational resources, limited access to electricity and the internet in remote areas, including limited support and resources for teachers. Therefore, the initiative was created with the exclusive goal of providing appropriate educational digital materials to children and youth in remote and rural areas worldwide, with the aim of improving literacy.
What is a Sun Book Tablet?
“Sun Book” is a solar powered tablet with pre-loaded interactive educational content, tailored to cultural and community education needs, in both mother tongue and English. Each Sun Book can have literacy resources of up to 600 e-books and stories, educational games, learning applications, videos and audio books.
The Sun Book tablet is designed for teachers as well as students, with a view to improving their ability to read and write in off-grid locations that otherwise have limited access to educational resources. By harnessing renewable energy to charge these devices, the initiative circumvents the fact that there is limited access to the internet and electricity in these remote areas.

It costs $270 USD to purchase 1 tablet pre-loaded with the bespoke Sun Books literacy app, and $750 USD for 2 tablets including teacher training modules for distribution to schools in remote communities.
